The Aosta Valley region lies among the highest mountains in the
Alpine range. The names of its peaks are world famous : Gran Paradiso,
Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco), Cervino and Monte Rosa. The ancient
role which the Aosta Valley once fulfilled as a European crossroad
for the Great St Bernard and Little St Bernard alpine passes has
now been altered with the opening of the Great St Bernard and
Mont Blanc motorway tunnels which enables travellers to reach
speedily the heart of the European continent. As well as the hospitality
provided by traditional tourist structures in the Aosta Valley,
there are also 49 rural holiday (or agriturismo) centres based
in some of the finest scenery in the central valley and its tributary
valleys. They offer holidays which allow the modern tourist to
satisfy that need to make contact with nature and to sample local
traditions at first hand.
